How to Froth Milk Without a Steam Wand

1 min readBy HomeBrewExpert Editorial

Four ways to froth milk without a steam wand — ranked from electric frothers to the mason jar method. Plus which milk types froth best.

How to Froth Milk Without a Steam Wand

A steam wand produces the best microfoam, but you can make excellent frothed milk for lattes and cappuccinos without one. Here are four methods ranked by quality.

Method 1: Electric Milk Frother ($50-80)

Best option: Breville Milk Cafe or Nespresso Aeroccino 4. Heat and froth milk simultaneously. Push a button, wait 2 minutes, pour. The Breville Milk Cafe produces the closest thing to steam wand microfoam you can get without steam.

Quality: 8/10 — dense, creamy foam with good texture.

Method 2: French Press Frothing ($0 if you own one)

Heat milk to 140-150°F in a microwave or saucepan. Pour into French press. Pump the plunger rapidly 20-30 times. The mesh filter aerates the milk effectively.

Quality: 7/10 — good foam but larger bubbles than steam. Swirl vigorously to break up large bubbles.

Method 3: Handheld Milk Frother ($10-15)

The classic battery-powered whisk. Heat milk, insert frother just below the surface, spin for 20-30 seconds. Produces foam quickly but with less texture control.

Quality: 6/10 — foamy but not true microfoam. Works fine for casual lattes.

Method 4: Mason Jar Shake ($0)

Pour warm milk into a mason jar (half full), seal tightly, shake vigorously for 60 seconds. Remove lid, microwave 30 seconds to stabilize foam.

Quality: 5/10 — bubbly rather than creamy, but functional in a pinch.

Milk Matters

Whole milk froths best — the fat content creates creamier, more stable foam. Oat milk is the best non-dairy frothing option (Oatly Barista Edition specifically). Almond and soy milk are harder to froth consistently.
