How to Descale and Clean Your Espresso Machine: Complete Maintenance Guide

Daily, weekly, and monthly espresso machine maintenance explained clearly — backflushing, cleaning groupheads, descaling schedule, and which products to use.

How to Descale and Clean Your Espresso Machine: Complete Maintenance Guide

A well-maintained espresso machine lasts 10-15 years. A neglected one fails in 2-3. Regular cleaning takes minutes and protects your investment while keeping every shot tasting its best.

Daily Maintenance (2 Minutes)

After every steam session: Purge the steam wand immediately. Run steam for 2-3 seconds right after you finish frothing milk. This prevents milk from drying inside the wand tube and blocking the tip.

Wipe the steam wand: Use a damp cloth to wipe milk residue while it''s still wet. Dried milk is much harder to remove and harbors bacteria.

Purge the grouphead: Run a short blank shot (no portafilter) for 3-5 seconds to flush old coffee oils from the shower screen and dispersion plate.

Wipe portafilter and basket: Knock out the puck immediately after brewing. Rinse with hot water. Wipe dry.

Weekly Maintenance (10 Minutes)

Backflush with detergent: Insert a blind basket (no holes) into your portafilter. Add a detergent tablet or 1/4 teaspoon of Cafiza powder. Run 5-6 short cycles (10 seconds on, 10 seconds off). Then backflush 3-4 times with clean water to rinse.

Note: Only machines with a 3-way solenoid valve (most semi-automatics) support backflushing. Check your machine''s manual.

Clean the basket and portafilter: Soak in hot water with Cafiza or similar espresso cleaner for 30 minutes. Coffee oils oxidize and become bitter over time — soaking removes them.

Rinse the drip tray: Remove, empty, rinse with hot water, dry.

Monthly Maintenance (15 Minutes)

Clean the grouphead gasket area: Use a small brush (a dedicated grouphead brush or old toothbrush) to scrub the area around the grouphead gasket and shower screen. Remove the shower screen if possible and soak it in cleaning solution.

Check the shower screen: If you see blocked holes or significant buildup, soak overnight in Cafiza solution.

Descaling (Every 2-3 Months for Average Use)

Scale is calcium and magnesium mineral deposits from water. It restricts flow, raises brew temperature, and eventually blocks internal pipes.

What to use: Manufacturer-recommended descaler, Dezcal, citric acid solution (1 tablespoon per liter of water). Never use vinegar — it leaves residue and can damage seals.

Basic descaling process:

  1. Fill the water tank with descaling solution
  2. Run half the tank through the machine in 30-second intervals
  3. Let the solution sit for 15-20 minutes
  4. Run the remaining solution through
  5. Empty the tank completely
  6. Refill with fresh water and run two full tanks through to rinse

Always consult your machine''s specific descaling instructions — some machines (Breville, De''Longhi) have guided descaling cycles.

Signs Your Machine Needs Immediate Attention

  • Shots running noticeably slower than usual (scale buildup)
  • Bitter or metallic taste in shots (old coffee oils or scale)
  • Steam wand reduced to a trickle (milk blockage or scale)
  • Unusual noises from the pump (air in lines or scale)
  • Machine taking longer to reach temperature (scale on heating element)

Catching these symptoms early means a cleaning cycle, not a repair bill.
